Set up in antiquity the village takes pride on eventful history and old renowned families. Several generations of the Bimbelov family lived here. The family tomb stones can be seen in the church of St. Demetrius, the only one of four which managed to survive until today. The Bimbelovs were descendants of the glorious voevoda (rebel leader) Momchil who, according to legends and folk songs, could carry a donkey loaded with wood across a turbulent river. His laughter would put down ten candles at one breath, his sword would cut a ten-fold cord. The Bimbelovs were so famous that sultan Selim privileged one of them, Stoian by name, to have his hat on in the presence of dignitaries, even when it was Carl the XII who visited the family during his exile in Turkey after being defeated by Peter the Great in the Poltava battle in 1709. |
